Son of Mike Ejeagha Reveals Short Burial Time After Father's Demise
After the reported death of 95-year-old highlife music legend, Mike Ejeagha — also known as the Gentleman — on a Friday due to a prolonged illness, his eldest son, Emmanuel Ejeagha, has shed light on the swift burial that took place within 24 hours after his demise.
The family's decision to abide by Mike Ejeagha's last wish was not taken lightly. Emmanuel disclosed that a family meeting was held, during which they all agreed to honor the wishes of their esteemed father, even receiving the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah's approval.
Emmanuel further stated that the burial occurred on June 7, in the late musician's hometown, Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, Enugu State, where his family gathered to lay him to rest according to his heartfelt wishes.
In a chat with Vanguard, Emmanuel explained, "My father had a strong conviction about his final wishes, expressing that he should be laid to rest within 24 hours of his passing. After weighing our options, the family, kindred, and even Governor Mbah agreed to respect and follow through with his wishes."
Cultural Implications
Acknowledging the cultural significance of adhering to the requests of their elders, Emmanuel emphasized the potential consequences of disregarding such stipulations. "We hold great respect for our elders' guidance, and we are well aware of the undesirable repercussions that may arise when their final wishes are not acknowledged," Emmanuel added, reiterating the importance of preserving cultural traditions.
Future Celebrations and Recognition
A committee comprising family members and the Enugu State government is planned to orchestrate funeral ceremonies slated for October 2025, allowing a suitable amount of time for mourning and preparation. Emmanuel also called for the Federal Government to posthumously honor Mike Ejeagha for his invaluable contributions to the music industry and cultural preservation.
Mike Ejeagha, an iconic figure in Nigeria's music industry for over 60 years, was celebrated for his lyrical storytelling and upholding Igbo oral traditions through his music. Classics like Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche are remembered fondly by many artists and music aficionados alike. Mike's music gained renewed popularity in 2024 when skit maker, Brain Jotter, featured one of his songs in a viral dance video, rekindling interest in Mike's discography among young fans.
