Solothurn Announces 2026 Health Insurance Subsidies: Canton to Meet Minimum Contribution

The canton of Solothurn has announced its health insurance premium subsidies for 2026. The Cantonal Council (Kantonsrat) has set the canton’s share following a proposal from the government council (Regierungsrat) in the October 28, 2025 session. The final amount will be decided by the Cantonal Council.

A total of 212.6 million Swiss francs will be available for health insurance premium subsidies next year. This includes 77 million francs for standard individual premium subsidies. The remaining funds will be allocated as follows:

  • 32 million francs will support social welfare recipients.
  • 17.5 million francs will go to families receiving supplementary benefits.
  • Approximately 86 million francs will be allocated to recipients of supplementary benefits.

The federal government will contribute 118.1 million francs, with the canton of Solothurn adding an additional 94.5 million francs. However, due to its tight financial situation, the canton will maintain the legally mandated minimum of 80 percent of the federal contribution.

In 2026, the canton of Solothurn will contribute only the legally required minimum to health insurance premium subsidies, amounting to 94.5 million francs. This decision reflects the canton's current financial constraints.
