Solingen's sudden road closures spark frustration over railway construction
Solingen has announced major road closures due to railway construction. The work will affect two key crossings— Schnittert and Wilzhauser Weg—starting next week. Residents and businesses have raised concerns about the short notice and disruption ahead.
The closures begin on February 24, 2026, as part of a long-term business running from April 3, 2023, to April 29, 2026. Both crossings will shut completely to regular traffic for about two months in this phase. The city states that extensive track work leaves no alternative but a full closure.
Emergency services will still pass through using temporary steel plates. A smaller fire tanker has also been stationed at Fire and Rescue Station II in Ohligs as a precaution. Waste collection schedules remain unchanged, with trucks granted access when needed.
Commercial and delivery traffic faces stricter controls. Only essential, non-postponable deliveries will be allowed, assessed individually. If the crossings become impassable at any point, an alternative route via Keusenhof will open.
Many locals have criticised the late public notification. Some argue the sudden full closure leaves little time to adjust travel plans or business operations.
The construction will last until at least the end of April 2026. Emergency services and waste collection will continue without major delays. Drivers and businesses must now plan for detours or restricted access during the work.
