Solingen's Fire Department revives Dalmatians as emergency alert partners
The Solingen Fire Department has launched an unusual pilot project to enhance emergency response. Known as the Firedogs Alert Team, the initiative revives the historic partnership between firefighters and Dalmatians. These dogs will now assist crews in a modern role—alerting the public when sirens fail. The project draws on centuries-old tradition. Dalmatians first worked alongside firefighters in the 18th and 19th centuries, calming horses, clearing paths, and guarding equipment. Their distinctive barking also helped signal approaching fire wagons.
Now, the Solingen department is adapting this heritage for today's needs. Trained Dalmatians will run beside fire trucks during emergencies, using their loud barks to grab attention. The idea is to provide a backup alert system if vehicle sirens malfunction or go unnoticed. The initiative has already captured public interest. Residents have shown enthusiasm for the mix of tradition and innovation. Over the coming months, the dogs' effectiveness in real emergencies will be closely monitored.
The Firedogs Alert Team aims to blend history with practical emergency response. If successful, the dogs could become a permanent feature of Solingen's firefighting efforts. Their performance during the pilot will determine whether the concept expands further.
