Soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart claimed to have thwarted a potential tragedy by intervening against a gunman, according to the Army secretary.
Breaking News: Heroic Soldiers Save Lives in Fort Stewart Shooting
A tragic incident unfolded at Fort Stewart in Georgia on Wednesday morning, when an active-duty U.S. Army sergeant, Quornelius Radford, opened fire at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, wounding five of his coworkers.
Radford, 28, used a personal 9mm handgun that he had purchased in Florida in May 2025. The gunman was quickly taken into custody after being tackled by a brave unarmed soldier.
The shooting appears to have been the result of a reported disagreement between Radford and one of the victims, who was targeted first. The soldier was shot in the chest, and Radford went on to shoot four others before being stopped.
All five wounded soldiers were treated on site and transported to medical facilities, with three requiring surgery. Two were moved to a Level 1 trauma center in Savannah, Georgia. Despite their injuries, all the soldiers are in stable condition and are expected to recover. Their identities have not been publicly disclosed.
The response by the soldiers and law enforcement was swift and effective. Sgt. Aaron Turner and another soldier bravely ran towards the gunman and tackled him, preventing further casualties. Staff Sgt. Melissa Taylor, an experienced medic and mother of three boys, sprinted towards a wounded soldier and held pressure to stop the bleeding. 1st Sgt. Joshua Arnold, who was in a conference room when he heard a noise and saw a flash, immediately put a wounded soldier on the ground, tried to stop the bleeding, and then went to help other victims.
The base was placed on lockdown from 11:04 a.m. until the afternoon after confirming no ongoing threat. Brig. Gen. John Lubas, the base commander, praised the soldiers’ quick action and resilience. The Secretary of the Army and the Secretary of Defense also commended the bravery and heroism displayed in the wake of the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing, led by the Army Criminal Investigative Division with FBI coordination. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and Radford is in pretrial confinement and has been interviewed by investigators.
In a statement, President Donald Trump expressed his condolences for the victims and their families, stating that the nation is praying for them and that the perpetrator will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks our soldiers face every day in the line of duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with the wounded soldiers and their families during this difficult time.
