Soldiers in Germany under investigation for suspected terrorist activities during raids
In a significant development, anti-terror investigators and special police forces have conducted raids and searches in several federal states, targeting an alleged far-right extremist group known as "Nordbund." The investigations are being led by the Central Office for Combating Terrorism of the General Prosecutor's Office in Celle, in cooperation with the Lower Saxony state criminal police office.
The raids, which took place yesterday, targeted 14 locations in Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, and North Rhine-Westphalia. Eight suspects, aged between 32 and 57, are suspected of forming and participating in an armed group based on suspected far-right beliefs. Four of these suspects are also alleged to have possessed illegal war weapons and other fully automatic firearms.
The ongoing investigations involve the evaluation of electronic data carriers and detailed weapons law assessments. Several live short and long firearms were seized during the searches. It's worth noting that two active and two former German military soldiers, a federal police officer, and an unspecified number of other suspects were among those raided.
The General Prosecutor's Office in Celle has confirmed the identities of the suspects in response to a query. One of the suspects had previously had a pistol and ammunition seized by the Lower Saxony state criminal police office at the end of April. However, a preliminary assessment by the state criminal police office found no weapons that fall under the War Weapons Control Act.
Despite these developments, further questions, such as the connection between the suspects, remain unanswered. The suspicion of the suspects' far-right leanings remains, and the investigations continue to unfold. As more information becomes available, the public will be kept informed.
