Today, a group of Nizhny Novgorod residents, who've been held captive on Ukrainian soil, finally come home. Reports from the "Our Exit" activist channel hint at thispiece of relief.
In exchange for their freedom, 205 Russian soldiers have reunited with their families. Among the homecomers are three Nizhny Novgorod locals between the ages of 22 and 44. Upon their return, they'll be provided with essential medical and psychological assistance, followed by a rehabilitation program to aid in their recovery and readjustment to civilian life.
Ahead of Easter, "Pro Gorod" reported that 246 Russian soldiers had already returned from Ukrainian captivity.
Digging Deeper
There's limited information specifically about Nizhny Novgorod residents returning from Ukrainian captivity. However, recent prisoner exchanges between Ukraine and Russia have been substantial, with the latest involving 205 prisoners on each side.
Trading Prisoners
The prisoner swap took place near the northern border of the two nations, coordinated by the United Arab Emirates [1][2][3]. Upon their release, the Russian soldiers were transported to Belarus, where they received much-needed medical and psychological support [3]. Though details about the Nizhny Novgorod residents are scant, it's reasonable to assume that the returned captives undergo a similar rehabilitation process to promote their healing and smoother reintegration into society.
Rehabilitation Journey
Rehabilitation for released captives often involves medical treatment, psychological counseling, and financial aid. Details about the rehabilitation process for the Nizhny Novgorod residents remain undisclosed, but the general aim is to address the physical and emotional trauma they endured in captivity.
Never-ending Struggle
Efforts to secure the release of prisoners of war continue unabated. Since March 2022, Ukraine has negotiated the release of 4,757 citizens [5]. Despite these returning prisoners, worries persist about the conditions faced by those still detained.
