Sofi Istominova clinches gold in her solo performance: Sambian dancer from Sverdlovsk region triumphs at the World Games in China

Sofia Istomina, a Russian athlete and Sambo Master of Sports, has clinched the gold medal in the women's up to 65 kg category at the World Combat Sambo tournament held in Chengdu, China. This victory marks a significant achievement for Istomina, who has previously won the European Championship, World Championship, and World Cup in combat sambo last year [4].

The World Games, an international multi-sport event, are taking place in Chengdu, attracting over 5,000 athletes from more than 100 countries [5]. This year, Combat Sambo was included in the World Games program for the first time, after a 32-year absence since its last appearance in 1985 and 1993 [1][3].

Istomina, who hails from Sverdlovsk Oblast, is the sole representative from her region at the tournament. She prepared diligently for this moment, dreaming of winning the gold medal at the World Games in China [9]. In the gold medal match, she defeated Uzbekistan's Feruza Bobokulova [6]. Despite her triumph, Istomina did not express any further thoughts about her victory, choosing instead to focus on her return home [7].

Upon her return, Istomina plans to have a well-deserved rest, go shopping, and meet with her family. Her mother, who comes from Sochi, will join her upon her return [8]. The athlete has been away from home for over half a year, competing in various tournaments.

The inclusion of Combat Sambo in the World Games program is a significant step towards the Olympic Games. Although no official announcement about Combat Sambo joining the Olympic Games program has been made, the International SAMBO Federation (FIAS) has gained recognition from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for its Para SAMBO disciplines, such as SAMBO for blind and visually impaired athletes [2]. This recognition could be an important step toward broader multi-sport event inclusion in the future.
