Söder’s Nuclear Plan Relies on a 66-Year-Old Canadian Research Reactor

A decades-old Canadian lab reactor is the centerpiece of Söder’s nuclear revival pitch. The catch? It’s never generated a single watt of electricity.

Greens: Söder's Canadian Dream Nuclear Reactor is 66 Years Old - Söder’s Nuclear Plan Relies on a 66-Year-Old Canadian Research Reactor

Söder proposed that Germany should follow Kanada’s lead by adopting reactors 'already in use' there. He specifically named the McMaster Nuclear Reactor (MNR) at McMaster University, which has been running since 1959. Yet the MNR has never produced electricity—its sole purpose is research.

The debate over Söder’s SMR proposal centres on accuracy and practicality. The Canadian reactor he cited has no history of power generation, and nuclear energy remains costly compared to alternatives. Without concrete evidence of economic benefits, the plan’s future remains uncertain.
