Soder seeks to preserve approximately 10,000 jobs within the public sector
In a move aimed at reducing costs and improving efficiency, Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder has announced plans to cut around 10,000 civil service jobs by 2040. This ambitious target, which has drawn criticism from the SPD in the Bavarian parliament, includes reductions in both ministries and the state chancellery.
Söder's plans also include a hiring freeze and long-term reduction, as well as reforms to part-time options for teachers. The Minister-President believes it is inefficient to employ career changers as teachers with high part-time rates.
In an effort to achieve budget savings, Söder also aims to utilise AI and reduce bureaucracy. He advocates for consistent bureaucracy reduction and better digital offerings, encouraging state employees to focus on serving citizens more effectively.
Holger Grießhammer, head of the SPD parliamentary group, has spoken out against the proposed cuts. Grießhammer does not support a blanket cut in the public service and disagrees with the idea of a "starved" state. Instead, he suggests that the focus should be on making the public service more efficient and effective.
The state government will experience job cuts as a result of these plans, with the exact number and impact yet to be determined. Söder's announcement has sparked debate in Bavaria, with criticism from the SPD and calls for a more balanced approach to public service reform.
In response to the proposed cuts, Söder plans to save costs on asylum seeker accommodations through reduced migration and targeted repatriation. This move is part of his broader strategy to make the public service more efficient and effective, while maintaining a focus on serving the needs of Bavaria's citizens.
