Israel Visit: Söder's Journey Amidst Crisis in Gaza
Two months after the devastating Hamas-led terror attack that sparked the Gaza conflict, Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder is set to visit Israel this Wednesday. Söder will meet with President Izchak Herzog and Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, followed by a visit to a nearby kibbutz on the border with the Gaza Strip.
"We wish to gain a firsthand perspective on the ground and provide essential support following the horrific terrorist attacks by Hamas," Söder remarked before the trip, emphasizing his motives. He has yet to comment on the situation in the Gaza Strip. Accompanying him will be a small delegation as he journeys to Tel Aviv and subsequently Jerusalem. Söder plans to return to Bavaria on Friday.
The United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), and World Health Organization (WHO) have all voiced concerns over the worsening situation in the Gaza Strip. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell labeled it "apocalyptic" after addressing EU foreign ministers in Brussels. Before the conflict, the Gaza Strip, roughly the size of Munich, housed over 2 million people, with half being children and young individuals.
The Gaza war was provoked by the deadliest attack in Israel's history, perpetrated by Hamas and other terrorist organizations on October 7 near the Gaza Strip border with Israel. Over 1200 people were killed in these unprecedented attacks. Israel retaliated with significant air strikes and, since October's end, has pursued a ground offensive in the area. According to Hamas-controlled health authorities, thousands have since perished, and over 49,200 have been injured, with the majority being civilians.
On this trip, Söder intends to express solidarity with Israel and reaffirm Bavaria's unwavering support for Jewish life. He will engage with victims of the attacks on the ground and provide financial assistance for a project designed to aid traumatized children and young individuals.
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is of international concern, with over 70% of its infrastructure destroyed. The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and European Commission are actively involved in providing aid and facilitating essential supply chains into the area. The crisis has resulted in significant humanitarian needs, with the UN and other organizations working to remove rubble, restore roads, and provide healthcare and education services.
