Hamburg's Head of Government Tschentscher is Confirmed for Another Term
Socialist politician Chchentscher secures position as Hamburg's leading official.
In a recent parliamentary vote, Peter Tschentscher of the Social Democrats (SPD) secured another term as Head of Government for the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. With ten extra votes, Tschentscher's tenure will continue in a coalition with the Greens for another legislative period.
The result saw 71 votes of support, 47 against, and one abstention, among the 119 members of the parliament. As SPD and Greens hold 70 seats between them, Tschentscher required at least one vote from the opposition to secure the position.
The parliament also approved the senators appointed by Tschentscher for their respective ministries, alongside Green politician Katharina Fegebank as Second Mayor. Additionally, Green chairwoman Maryam Blumenthal will join the senate, taking over the science authority previously led by Fegebank.
While personnel changes are minimal, the new senate will feature a female majority, with seven out of twelve roles held by women. Among the senators that remain in office, SPD state chairwoman Melanie Leonhard assumes the role of Minister of Economics, along with fellow SPD members Karen Pein, Melanie Schlotzhauer, Ksenija Bekeris, Andreas Dressel, Andy Grote, and Carsten Brosda who will handle urban development, social affairs, schools, finance, interior, and culture respectively. Green senators Anna Gallina (justice) and Anjes Tjarks (transportation) complete the lineup.
Despite suffering losses in the election earlier this year, the SPD emerged victorious and commenced coalition negotiations with the Greens. Together, they have governed Hamburg since 2015, with Tschentscher taking up the post of First Mayor since 2018. The parties recently presented their coalition agreement, titled "Hamburg United — With Heart and Mind," which includes significant investments in infrastructure, transport, climate protection, and the education system. The next regular election in Hamburg is scheduled for 2030.
