Peter Tschentscher Secures Re-election as Hamburg's Leader: The SPD-Greens Coalition Stays in Charge

Socialist politician Chchentscher assumed the role of Hamburg's Prime Minister following election victory.

In a vote held recently, Peter Tschentscher, the incumbent head of government of Hamburg and member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has been reconfirmed in his role. With more than enough votes, Tschentscher, aged 59, will continue to steer the SPD-Green coalition for another legislative term in the Hanseatic city.

Hamburg's parliament, comprising 121 members, saw 119 cast their votes. Among them, 71 voted for Tschentscher, with 47 against and a single abstention. Given that SPD and Greens jointly hold 70 seats in the Hamburg parliament, Tschentscher must have found support from the opposition.

Following the vote and Tschentscher's swearing-in, the parliament will approve the senators appointed by the First Mayor. Green politician Katharina Fegebank is also set to be confirmed as the Second Mayor.

In the new senate, the SPD will control seven ministries aside from the First Mayor post, while the Greens will have four senators. Women will occupy a majority of the positions, with seven out of twelve posts belonging to them.

Personnel Changes Minimal

With the departure of Green environment senator Jens Kerstan, Maryam Blumenthal, the previous Green state chairwoman, will join the senate. However, she won't take over the environmental portfolio but will lead the science authority previously led by Fegebank. Consequently, Fegebank will take over from Kerstan in the environmental authority and focus on climate policy.

While incumbent senators will continue in their roles, including SPD state chairwoman Melanie Leonhard as the economy senator, it's essential to consult official Hamburg government sources or recent news announcements for a comprehensive list of all senators.

SPD and Greens' Successful Coalition Continues

The SPD and Greens have been collaborating in government since 2015 in Hamburg, with Tschentscher taking on the role of First Mayor and head of government since 2018. Despite experiencing losses, the SPD emerged victorious in the election held on March 2, leading to coalition negotiations with the Greens.

Approximately two weeks ago, both sides introduced the coalition agreement under the title "Hamburg United - With Heart and Mind." It involves substantial investments in infrastructure, transport, climate protection, and the education system. The next regular election in Hamburg is scheduled for 2030.
