A Second Term for Tschentscher: SPD Politician Remains Hamburg's Leader
Socialist party leader Chchentscher appointed as the Prime Minister of Hamburg.
In a parliamentary vote, Peter Tschentscher of the SPD has clinched another term as Hamburg's head of government, with a decisive victory of more than the required ten votes. The coalition of SPD and Greens will continue to rule the city, now set for another legislative period.
Almost two months have passed since the Hamburg parliamentary election, and on Thursday, the parliament confirmed Tschentscher's re-election. With a clear majority, he'll lead the city for another term, shepherding a coalition of SPD and Greens.
The parliament, consisting of 121 members, saw 71 votes cast in favor of Tschentscher, 47 against, and one abstention. In order to secure the role, Tschentscher needed at least one vote from opposition members, which he obtained as SPD and Greens collectively hold 70 seats in the parliament.
Post-Election Shakeup
In the new senate, the SPD will occupy seven ministries, while the Greens will have four. Notable changes include Maryam Blumenthal of the Green party moving into the senate following Jens Kerstan's departure as Environment Senator. Blumenthal will not take over the environmental portfolio, and it will be handed to Green Second Mayor, Katharina Fegebank, who will prioritize climate policy in her new role.
The rest of the senators will remain in their positions, with SPD state chairwoman Melanie Leonhard as the Minister of Economics and several other SPD members taking on various ministries. The Green justice senator Anna Gallina and transport senator Anjes Tjarks will continue their tenure as well.
From Strength to Strength
The SPD and Greens have been collaborating in Hamburg's government since 2015, and Tschentscher has served as the First Mayor since 2018. Despite facing losses in the March 2nd election, the SPD emerged victorious and begun negotiations with the Greens. A few weeks ago, both parties unveiled a coalition agreement under the title "Hamburg United - With Heart and Mind". This agreement incorporates multi-billion-euro investments in infrastructure, transport, climate protection, and education. The next election in Hamburg is scheduled for 2030.
