Socialist Mayor Reverses Approval of Security Measures for Mosque's Warehouse
Controversy Surrounds Fire at World Heritage Site, Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba
A fire recently broke out at the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, a World Heritage Site, causing concern and discussion among locals and officials. The former mayor of Córdoba, Isabel Ambrosio, has entered a heated debate over the incident, criticizing the current president of the Andalusian government, Juanma Moreno, for his handling of the fire risk.
During her tenure as mayor, Ambrosio played a significant role in managing the risk related to the Mosque-Cathedral. Measures to protect and manage risk, including fire hazards, were implemented during her administration. However, after her term, she publicly criticized Moreno over his approach to the same issues.
This contradiction has been noted in public discourse, as Ambrosio's earlier administration had responsibilities for the site's risk management and fire prevention. Critics and analysts point out that the responsibility and some actions were initiated under Ambrosio's leadership, which complicates the validity of her critiques of Moreno's management.
The warehouse that was involved in the fire was part of a self-protection plan for the Mosque-Cathedral, which was approved by the City Council in 2017. The warehouse was in the process of being moved from the historic building when the fire occurred. It is important to note that the responsible party for the Mosque-Cathedral had obtained two nearby premises to stop using a space inside the monument as a warehouse.
ICOMOS, the advisory body of UNESCO, had previously warned about the risk to the Mosque-Cathedral. The exact nature of the warnings and the actions taken by Ambrosio's administration in response to these warnings are not fully documented.
Ambrosio is currently the spokesperson for the Socialist group in the Andalusian Parliament. She has stated that the fire at the Mosque-Cathedral was due to negligence, but the police have not yet completed their report on the causes of the fire. The Church, as the owner of the Mosque-Cathedral, has defended its ownership with legal and historical arguments, preventing public ownership from being established.
The mayor's main battle during her time in office was to get the City Council involved in making the Mosque-Cathedral public property, but the process ended in failure. Baltasar López, a former mayor of Córdoba, was also involved in this effort.
The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba remains a symbol of historical and cultural significance. The ongoing debate surrounding its management and the recent fire incident serve as a reminder of the importance of proper risk management and preservation of such precious heritage sites.
