Letting the Cat Out of the Bag: SPD's Foreign Policy Stance Uncovered
SPD parliamentary faction discards Stegner's 'declaration' on foreign affairs policy - Socialist coalition dissociates from Stegner's foreign policy declaration
It's clear as daylight: the SPD is a peace-loving party, that much is certain. But it ain't blind to the new realities out there that demand a solid military backing alongside diplomacy.
That's the gist of what the MPs are saying anyways. This stance, however, clashes pretty hard with the stance in a recent manifesto penned by some prominent SPD politicians. These guys want a total U-turn in foreign and security policy, with talks with Russia and a halt to the deployment of new US intermediate-range missiles in Germany.
Names like Ralf Stegner, Rolf Mützenich, Norbert Walter-Borjans, and Hans Eichel are all over this manifesto. They're advocating for policies that are dead opposite to the current federal government and SPD leadership.
Now, the SPD's official spokesperson for foreign policy, Ahmetovic, ain't having none of it. He's read the manifesto. Hell, he's read it from five out of the 120 members of the parliamentary group. But the SPD's foreign and security policy realignment? That ain't happening.
The SPD's still backing Ukraine and they don't think a new security architecture with Russia can be built as long as Russia keeps up its aggressive-imperialistic foreign policy. Plus, they're all about a Europe-compliant foreign policy and the transatlantic alliance with the USA.

- The SPD's foreign policy seems to be a topic of debate, as some prominent party members advocate for a change in policy, including talks with Russia and halting the deployment of new US missiles.
- Despite the manifesto authored by certain SPD politicians suggesting a significant shift in foreign and security policy, the SPD's official spokesperson for foreign policy has refuted the idea of a policy realignment, stressing support for Ukraine, a Europe-compliant foreign policy, and the transatlantic alliance with the USA.
