Social Security Fairness Act Clears Hurdle, Set for House Vote Next Week

Reps. Bob Good and Andy Harris attempted to hinder the progress of a bill, but were thwarted by House rules. Meanwhile, lawmakers are poised to pass legislation repealing two tax provisions affecting federal retirees' annuity benefits on election day.

The Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82) aims to eliminate the windfall elimination provision and government pension offset. Reps. Garret Graves and Abigail Spanberger rallied 218 signatures for a discharge petition, forcing a vote on the bill.

The measure is slated for a vote under suspension of the rules next week, requiring two-thirds support. Although the Senate companion has 63 supporters, it has been stuck in committee since last year.

After overcoming a hurdle from Reps. Good and Harris, the Social Security Fairness Act is set for a House vote next week. The bill seeks to repeal two controversial tax provisions affecting federal retirees' annuity benefits, which could significantly affect federal retirees' benefits on election day.
