Lukas White, the social media sensation with over half a million TikTok followers, can't help but smirk when he reminisces about his critics back in his conservative eastern German hometown. "It's quite a kick," says the 22-year-old in the latest episode of the podcast "OKF - Ortskontrollfahrt" on RBB radio station Fritz. "People who laughed at my early online endeavors, claiming they'd never amount to anything and were a sheer embarrassment, are now actively tracking my career," he chuckles.
Lukas's rise to TikTok fame, rooted in the small village of Nachterstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, was met with skepticism and ridicule initially. Growing up in this close-minded environment, Lukas recalls, he was often shunned as a "weirdo" with few companions. With limited entertainment options in his hometown, he turned to the world of social media at the tender age of 11. "Had I grown up in Berlin, I might have discovered other ways to pass the time," he muses.
Teachers Unappreciative, Peers Unsupportive
His peers and educators failed to comprehend his enthusiasm for lip-sync videos and looked down on his online pursuits. "They were unfair and snide," he recalls, detailing their reactions in the podcast series where celebrities share stories about their hometown experiences in eastern Germany. "I'm just creating lip-sync videos, come on! You're an adult, why are you so worked up about it? Just concentrate on teaching your class." One teacher even presented an ultimatum: "Either you stick with social media or you focus on school here." Lukas's response? "Alright then, I'll depart."
Now, Lukas Leonhardt – his name outside the digital realm - makes a living through TikTok and acting. He traded his life in the conservative village for the pulsating rhythm of Berlin. In the city, he has not only found financial success but also personal growth. Coupled with the more accepting environment, Lukas notes a marked shift in his perspective that he cultivated in the village but is far removed from the life he leads today. "The attitudes I absorbed in Nachterstedt are poles apart from my beliefs and lifestyle in the present," he admits, acknowledging that they were not always beneficial.
