Social Democrats Favour the Proposed Idea.
The German Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the state of Baden-Württemberg is currently embroiled in a heated dispute about the future role of Saskia Esken, the party's federal chairwoman.
Sascha Binder, the general secretary of the SPD in Baden-Württemberg, has criticised Esken's self-promotion for cabinet posts in an interview with "Südkurier" and "Badischer Zeitung". According to Binder, cabinet posts should be given to those who have a lot of trust within the party and among the people outside. He does not see Esken among the four best candidates for such positions.
Leni Breymaier, the former SPD state chairwoman, has openly defended Esken and attacked Binder for his criticism. Breymaier accused Binder of making life difficult for women in the party and asserting himself to provide posts. She criticised those who want to take it out on Esken if a few men want to assert themselves and provide posts. Breymaier believes that a team is needed that presents a clear picture to the outside world.
Andreas Stoch, the state chairman, and Esken herself have remained silent about the dispute. Stoch merely referred to the decision being made in Berlin.
The SPD is currently voting on the coalition agreement and the Social Democrats' member survey. This dispute is not limited to the southwest state association, as the personnel issue of Esken is controversial.
Esken, who served as co-leader of the SPD from 2021 to 2025 alongside Lars Klingbeil, has publicly opposed foreign interference in German elections. She strongly criticised external influences attempting to sway SPD election outcomes.
It is unclear whether Sascha Binder or Leni Breymaier have made any recent public statements beyond those mentioned here. For a detailed analysis of such comments and defenses, consulting the latest German political news sources or SPD press releases directly would be necessary.
