Social Democrat Party re-elects Ingo Schäfer as their candidate for the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag)
Ingo Schäfer, the SPD candidate for the upcoming Bundestag election in Solingen-Remscheid-Wuppertal II, has made waves with his proposal for a "Kommunalschuldenfonds" or municipal debt fund. This fund, if established, would provide much-needed financial relief to municipalities burdened by historical debts.
Schäfer, a directly elected member of the German Bundestag since 2021, has emphasized the importance of this fund in allowing indebted local governments to maintain services and invest in their communities without excessive fiscal constraints.
The proposed municipal debt fund aims to offer a sustainable solution to manage and reduce old debts, thereby preventing further financial distress and promoting local economic stability. This focus on municipal debt relief reflects Schäfer's commitment to fiscal and social policy improvements at the local level.
During the recent constituency delegates' conference, Schäfer's supporters, including mayors Tim Kurzbach (Solingen) and Burkhard Mast-Weisz (Remscheid), Jörg-Dieter Krause (chairman of the Remscheid SPD), Iris Preuß-Buchholz (chairperson of the SPD faction in Solingen), and Sabine Vischer-Kippenhahn (co-chairperson of the Solingen SPD), were in attendance.
The election on February 23 will see Schäfer running against a competitor who is expected to attack social achievements. Despite this, Schäfer has brought a significant amount of funding to the Bergisches Städtedreieck region in the past three and a half years. He highlighted the increase in the minimum wage to over 12 euros as a success of social democratic government policy.
Vischer-Kippenhahn, along with Krause, criticized the FDP for attempting to bring down the federal government at a convenient time. Krause also stated that no one in Germany needs Merz, even his voters.
The municipal debt fund proposal is a notable aspect of Schäfer's political platform, and it reflects his dedication to improving the financial health of local governments and promoting social and economic stability in the region.
