Sochi's oil rig inferno is getting doused
Ukrainian Drone Attack Causes Major Fire in Sochi, No Casualties Reported
In the early hours of August 3, 2025, Sochi, the popular Black Sea resort, was the target of a drone attack. The incident, which occurred around 2 AM, caused a significant fire at an oil depot but no casualties were reported, according to Mayor Andrei Pushkarev.
Russian air defenses reportedly shot down a large number of drones, with figures ranging between 93 and over 100 Ukrainian drones intercepted overnight. The downed drone debris fell in a garage cooperative on Aviatsionnaya Street in Sochi, causing a fire at the oil depot.
Emergency services were quick to respond, with more than 120 firefighters working to bring the blaze under control. The firefighting efforts are still underway, with 127 people and 35 units of equipment on site. Operational services are also on site to monitor the situation.
The fire at the oil depot caused the temporary suspension of flights at Sochi’s airport by Russia’s civil aviation authority. However, city infrastructure is functioning normally, as confirmed by Mayor Pushkarev.
The drone attack led to a threat alert being declared in Sochi, but the rocket threat has since been lifted. Krasnodar Krai Governor Veniamin Kondratyev made a statement about the situation in Sochi, and Mayor Pushkarev is personally monitoring the situation.
Ukrainian forces claimed they struck key military and energy targets inside Russia in retaliation for Moscow's strikes on Ukraine. Earlier reports indicated that air defenses intercepted or destroyed around 112 drones across multiple regions, including the one that caused the fire at the oil depot in Sochi.
This incident marks the latest escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. While the situation in Sochi is under control, with firefighting efforts successful and no casualties reported specifically from the Sochi incident, drone strikes elsewhere in Russia have caused some casualties.
