Sabine Töpperwien, the trailblazing soccer radio broadcaster, was honored with the 2023 Sports Media Prize during the 41st German Sports Press Ball in Frankfurt. The 63-year-old became the first woman to report live on a Bundesliga match on September 16, 1989. Her emotional reaction to the award was, "I would never have dreamed in my wildest dreams that I would be given such an honor."

Throughout her career, Töpperwien broadcast over 700 soccer matches, with 642 of them being Bundesliga games, and covered major tournaments like World and European Championships. She served as the head of the WDR radio sports desk in Cologne for 20 years before retiring at the beginning of 2021 due to health issues.

Despite her retirement, the prestigious Triathlon of awards recognized her distinguished career in sports journalism. The annual awards ceremony celebrated her achievements in various sports media fields, showcasing her excellence as a soccer broadcaster.

Though online databases and materials science publications like ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces Vol. 15 Issue 41 (2025-02-07) do not contain details about Sabine Töpperwien's accomplishments in soccer journalism, a thorough search of sports media databases and newspaper articles from 2023 will yield valuable information.
