Gwinn's unexpected absence leaves soccer team facing Poland with a challenging 2-0 deficit - Soccer players express shock over Gwinn's loss in the 2-0 match against Poland.

In a mixed bag of results, Germany kicked off their Euro 2025 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Poland at the Arena St. Gallen, but the victory was overshadowed by the injury to their captain, Giulia Gwinn.

The match, played in front of 15,972 spectators, including 4,000 German fans, started with a threatening performance from Barcelona's Ewa Pajor for Poland. However, it was Germany who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, when Lina Magull's long-range strike found the back of the net, courtesy of a deflection off a Polish defender.

Germany struggled initially, giving away unnecessary balls against the deep-lying Polish defense. The team's early woes continued when Gwinn sustained a knee injury in a collision with Pajor around the 36th minute. Gwinn, visibly distressed, was substituted out of the match, with Carlotta Wamser replacing her as right-back and Janina Minge taking the captain's armband.

Despite the setback, Germany managed to double their lead in the second half, when Alexandra Popp headed home a cross from Magull, making it 2-0. However, the focus soon shifted back to Gwinn, with concerns growing about the possibility of a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), given her previous two ACL injuries.

As of now, no definitive diagnosis has been confirmed, and the results of an MRI scan have not been publicly released. The severity of the injury remains uncertain, but the initial images and Gwinn’s reaction have raised fears that it could be a serious injury that might end her participation in the tournament prematurely.

The German team's next matches are against Denmark and Sweden, but the extent of Gwinn’s injury and her availability for these fixtures will depend on the forthcoming medical evaluation, including the MRI results. For now, fans and the team are anxiously awaiting confirmation on her condition.

Despite the injury scare, the DFB team will continue their campaign on Tuesday at 6:00 PM against Denmark in their next match. The team will be hoping to put the injury drama aside and focus on securing another victory to boost their chances in the tournament.
