Fresh Take on PSD Leader's Criticism of Admiral Gouveia e Melo
Soares Accuses Gouveia and Melo of Cognitive Lapses: colossal inefficiencies in judgment, according to his statement
In an upcoming interview with Antena 1, Hugo Soares, the outspoken parliamentary leader of Portugal's Social Democratic Party (PSD), takes aim at Admiral Gouveia e Melo's unconventional approach to supporting a government led by André Ventura.
"Look, this ain't how it's usually done. You need the political juice to play in the big leagues. The way these political scenarios are being tossed around smacks of a lack of experience or no experience at all," Soares mused, commenting on Gouveia e Melo's interview on TVI/CNN.
Soares also sounded the warning bell, stating that a potential Gouveia e Melo presidency presents a significant risk, while denying claims that his candidacy is causing divisions among the PSD's base and Luís Marques Mendes' supporters.
"I reckon Gouveia e Melo is tearing Chega's electorate apart and their party itself, since it's still not clear if they're backing him or not. And it's a puzzle because we don't know if he's after Chega's support or not," he accused.
Soares reiterated his concerns over the public's limited knowledge about Admiral Gouveia e Melo's political ideologies, stating that referring to him solely by his military rank is misleading and problematic.
"Listen, that whole 'admiral' thing when talking about my man from Belém? Nah, that don't sit well with me. I don't think it's healthy for someone who's held the highest-ranking positions within the military to jump ship and run for the presidency. I'm tellin' ya, that doesn't sit right for democracy," Soares concluded.
In the upcoming interview, Soares anticipates a calmer legislature, suggesting that the PS is moving towards a more moderate leadership, while André Ventura seeks to be seen as more responsible and politically mature.
