Snuneymuxw First Nation purchases the Great Canadian Casino Vancouver in Coquitlam
The Snuneymuxw First Nation has reached a deal to buy the Great Canadian Casino Vancouver in Coquitlam. This marks a major move towards economic independence for the community. The casino currently operates under Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited.
The casino features 917 slot machines, 37 table games, and 42 electronic table games. It is one of the largest gaming venues in the region.
The Snuneymuxw First Nation, with around 2,000 members, is one of British Columbia’s biggest Indigenous communities. Leaders have described the purchase as a key step toward 'economic self-determination'. The deal still requires approval under the Competition Act and other standard regulatory checks. Until then, the transaction remains pending.
If finalised, the acquisition will place the casino under the ownership of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. The community aims to strengthen its financial future through this investment. Regulatory reviews will determine the next steps.
