Snowfall Hits Kashmir, Ends Dry Spell; Roads Closed, Flights Cancelled
Heavy snowfall has swept across Jammu and Kashmir, ending a long dry spell and transforming hazardous air quality into clean, breathable conditions. The sudden weather shift has brought both relief and disruption, with cancelled flights and blocked roads alongside hopes for a thriving tourist season.
Over the past 48 hours, moderate snow blanketed the Kashmir Valley’s hills, while rain fell in the plains. Popular destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam saw accumulations of 5 to 18 inches, reviving hopes for winter sports and festive celebrations. The snow also cleared smog, eased respiratory issues, and replenished water sources.
The downside included 15 cancelled flights at Srinagar International Airport due to poor visibility. Major routes—such as the Srinagar-Leh Highway, Mughal Road, Sinthan-Kishtwar Road, and Bandipora-Gurez Road—were shut because of slippery conditions. Forecasters predict light to moderate rain and snow will continue for the next 24 hours, with heavier falls in higher areas. After that, dry weather is expected until the 29th, when another western disturbance may arrive. Local businesses and stakeholders have welcomed the snow, anticipating a surge in tourists for Christmas and New Year. The improved air quality and scenic landscapes are likely to boost sustainable livelihoods in the region.
The snowfall has brought immediate benefits, from cleaner air to economic optimism, despite travel disruptions. With more precipitation expected and a potential second disturbance later this month, authorities and residents are preparing for both challenges and opportunities ahead.
