Snorkeler injured in rare shark attack near Great Barrier Reef

A man in his 50s has been injured in a shark attack while snorkelling near Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The incident happened off Lady Elliot Island, close to the central Queensland coast, on Thursday morning.

The victim suffered a deep cut to his arm and minor wounds to his abdomen. Emergency services responded quickly, airlifting him to Bundaberg Hospital. He arrived in stable condition.

Current data does not show confirmed shark attacks along Queensland's east coast for 2023. Official records instead focus on incidents from 2025 and more recent events in 2026.

The man remains under medical care after the shark tank attack. Authorities have not released further details about the shark species or the exact circumstances. The incident adds to ongoing discussions about shark activity in the region.
