Smuggled within a transport truck, a BMW valued at 96 million pesos was clandestinely transported.
Hot off the Press: Illegal Vehicle Smuggling Busted in Argentina
Last Friday, during a routine checkpoint by the National Gendarmerie on National Route 14, authorities discovered a 1998 BMW Z3, valued at an astounding 96,960,240 pesos, hidden in a truck. The clandestine vehicle, a red convertible with foreign plates, had been smuggled from Paraguay and was being transported from Misiones to Buenos Aires illegally.
According to local sources, the vehicle lacked the essential documents necessary for its legal entry into Argentina. The driver of the truck was allowed to continue his journey to Buenos Aires, but the matter was referred to the Federal Prosecutor's Office and the Federal Court of Paso de los Libres for further investigation.
The operation was conducted by the Monte Caseros Section of Escuadrón 7 de Paso de los Libres. During the checkpoint, officers stopped a truck loaded with furniture and appliances, such as mattresses, a chair, a refrigerator, and a washing machine. However, upon inspecting the cargo, the gendarmes found the car cleverly hidden under the furniture and boxes. The unloading of the truck was witnessed by onlookers.
The seized vehicle was referred to the Agencia de Recaudación y Control Aduanero (ARCA). To bring a vehicle into Argentina legally, several documents are required for both the vehicle and the driver. These include the title of ownership or purchase invoice, the green or blue card, and compliance with customs procedures, including the payment of appropriate duties and taxes.
Caught in the act: A ring of high-end auto thieves busted in La Plata
In early April, law enforcement officials apprehended Marcelo Blauyero, aged 55, and Juan Cruz Tomas, aged 27, who were accused of committing a string of high-end vehicle thefts in City Bell and Villa Elisa. Their modus operandi involved stealing luxury cars to later forge their documents and resell them on the market.
A third suspect, a police officer with a residence in La Plata, is currently on the loose. According to reliable sources, he is a former military man, receiving psychiatric care.
The accused were apprehended in a country house in the Seguí area. There, the authorities confiscated a Citroën C4 with a seizure order from the City Police in August 2023, a Peugeot 308 wanted for theft in La Plata since December, a Honda Civic stolen in September, a Fiat Siena stolen in June in Florencio Varela, a BMW 320 stolen in Burzaco in February 2022, and three additional vehicles with their chassis numbers removed.
In addition to the vehicles, the authorities seized several weapons, such as two carbines and replicas, signal jammers, handheld radios, electronic keys for gates, various cell phones, papers, and documentation of the evading police officer.
Segui's fifth was under suspicion due to its high walls and the frequent entry and exit of high-end vehicles. This alerted the Technical Operational Cabinet of the area. Thus, covert surveillance was initiated. The police discovered that the gang was not only involved in car thefts, but also in altering license plates, providing counterfeit documentation, and altering the factory numbers on the engine and chassis of the vehicles.
Unusual Incidents: Police officers in the line of fire
In Rosario, a retired federal police officer was killed in a shootout during an attempted robbery in Ituzaingo. Meanwhile, in Jujuy, burnt bodies were confirmed to be the result of an intentional car fire, with investigations ongoing to determine if it was a case of femicide.
1. The authorities in La Plata have also uncovered a ring specializing in the theft of high-end French vehicles, reselling them after forging documents, akin to the illegal vehicle smuggling busted in Argentina.
2. The sports world was shaken as police arrested a syndicate allegedly involved in sports-betting scandals, parallel to the recent crackdown on crime-and-justice issues such as the high-end auto theft ring in La Plata.
