Smithsonian Institution refuses allegations of White House influence to excise Trump impeachment mentions

In a twist of events, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History has found itself at the centre of a debate over political bias and historical accuracy. The controversy began in 2023, when references to President Donald Trump's two impeachment trials were removed from a newly updated section on presidential impeachments.

The decision to remove the references sparked public outrage and criticism, with some accusing the museum of engaging in political bias or whitewashing history. The label, which was part of a section called "Limits of Presidential Power," included materials on the impeachment of Presidents Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson, the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard Nixon's resignation, and previously, a temporary label referring to Trump's impeachments.

Trump, who is the only president to have been impeached twice, was first impeached in 2019 for pushing Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate Joe Biden. His second impeachment came in 2021 for "incitement of insurrection," in reference to the Jan. 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters. Both impeachments were voted for by the Democratic majority in the House, but Trump was acquitted each time by the Republican-led Senate.

Despite the removal, the Smithsonian had previously pledged to include all impeachments, including Trump's, in a future and updated exhibit. Now, following the backlash, Smithsonian officials have stated they would review the content and consider reinstating the references.

The new Smithsonian exhibit, which is set to be ready in the coming weeks, will include President Donald Trump, as confirmed by the White House. The specific date for the exhibit's readiness, however, has not been disclosed by the museum.

It's worth noting that the label was removed from the exhibit due to not meeting the museum's standards in appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation. The label blocked the view of the objects inside its case and was not consistent with other sections in the exhibit.

The Smithsonian also clarified that they were not asked by any Administration or government official to remove references to Trump's impeachments from an exhibit. The controversy highlights tensions around how historical events related to recent presidencies are presented in national institutions, especially those with significant political and social implications.

As the exhibit approaches its launch, the Smithsonian will undoubtedly face continued scrutiny over the inclusion of President Trump's impeachments. The museum's decision could have far-reaching implications for how future presidential impeachments are presented and remembered in American history.
