Smaller school, Whitney girls basketball exemplifies that anything can be achieved with determination and skill.
Whitney High School Girls Basketball Team Wins First State Championship in 49-Year History
The Whitney High School girls basketball team made history on Mar. 15, 2025, by winning the CIF State Division 4 title. This was the first state championship for any Whitney team since 2003 and the first girls basketball championship in the school's 49-year history.
The Wildcats finished the season with a record of 28-9, their best ever. They clinched the title with a hard-fought victory against Half Moon Bay High last Saturday morning in Sacramento.
Haylie Wang, a senior on the team, led the Wildcats with 727 points during the season. Her career-high 46 points in a game against Artesia High were instrumental in their journey to the state championship.
The team's success is not just a testament to the current players but also a tribute to past stars like Kristina DeVilla, Olivia Yaung, Michelle Lee, Alyssa Muramatsu, Ny, Christine Hamakawa, Nicole Lee, Rachel Nagel, Reyna Ta'amu, Justine Wu, Kayla Hamakawa, Janelle Ho, Kim Hosoda, Layla Lacorte, Julianna Lee, Mady Macaraeg, Rachel Song, Kylie Wang, and Makenna Yokoyama.
The victory was dedicated to longtime assistant coach Wayne Muramatsu, who has been involved with the girls basketball program for over two decades. Myron Jacobs, the head coach, now needs two more victories to become the all-time winningest girls basketball coach at Whitney High, an academic school with approximately 700 students.
Schools in the ABC Unified School District have won at least one CIF State basketball championship. This is the only known CIF State basketball championship won by a school in this district, as no additional information indicates any other championships. The Whitney High girls basketball team has also won 10 league titles in the past 23 seasons.
The 1986 and 1987 boys basketball teams, under the tutelage of Bruce Carlisle, won the Small Schools title. However, it's been over two decades since any Whitney team has won a state championship, until now. The 2024-2025 season will be remembered as the year the Whitney High girls basketball team broke the drought and etched their names in the history books.
