Tampere, Finland (dpa) - The International Luge Federation (FIL) has held firm, banning Russian athletes yet again after their 73rd congress. This decision factored in the qualification process for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

"Our congress has made its stance abundantly clear—we're dedicating ourselves to maintaining a fair and secure competition," declared FIL President Einars Fogelis. "We acknowledge and respect the divergent opinions within our community, particularly our athletes," he added.

This solid resolve echoes the FIL's longstanding stance, established since September 23, 2022. The debate chiefly revolved around whether Russian athletes could compete under the International Olympic Committee's guidelines as "neutral athletes" (AIN).

Anonymous Surveys: Voices Unheard

Leon Felderer, chair of the FIL Athletes' Commission, revealed the results of an anonymous luge and natural track athletes' survey in Tampere. This data presented a complex picture, with athletes expressing concerns about Olympic quotas, anti-doping measures, fairness, and equal opportunities in the qualification process. "Athletes harbor a myriad of perspectives. Concerns and arguments can be found on either side," Felderer succinctly summarized.

The voting outcomes showcased a strong consensus—24 delegates voted to maintain the ban, 7 against with one invalid vote. In a second vote, the FIL executive was not given authorization to devise a participation program for neutral Russian athletes. This effectively rules out the possibility of Russian athletes competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics. The final tallies were a resounding 24 votes in favor of the comprehensive ban, while 8 opted to explore the possibility of AIN regulations.

Insight:

The FIL's ban on Russian athletes from the 2026 Winter Olympics, regardless of a neutal flag, can be traced back to multiple contentious issues such as the Ukraine conflict, fairness, safety, and the integrity of competition. The decision aligns with international sports sanctions against Russia that were imposed after its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Source
