Unraveling the Transformative Slide: Is the U.S. Nudging Toward Authoritarianism?

Slide in the direction of autocratic rule - assessing the extent of U.S. transformation

From every corner of the media sphere, analysis and commentary are abundant. The consensus is crystal clear: once known as a beacon of democracy and a leading champion of freedom, the U.S. is no longer what it used to be. Rather, the government under President Donald Trump is systematically dismantling and subverting the democratic system of the United States.

Historically, the U.S. served as a symbol of hope and liberty for countless people worldwide. Now, the unraveling of democracy seems to be lurking in the shadows of the current political landscape. Trump, with his power grabs, verbal attacks, and questionable decisions, is steering the nation towards a frightening new direction.

But just how far has the U.S. slid, and is there any hope of turning this jumbled mess around? Inquiries into the matter are as numerous as the symptoms themselves.

The Blatant Question: Autocracy or Not?

Accusations of a shift towards autocracy are rife among researchers. They argue that the U.S. is subtly disintegrating into this unsettling political paradigm. Despite the ambiguity surrounding the matter, experts maintain that the United States is tiptoeing the edge.

The nation's trajectory can be scrutinized and assessed through various criteria. Amidst the chaos of the first months of Trump's tenure, the disturbing facts are finally starting to surface. Scrutiny reveals that Trump has set his sights on numerous cornerstones of the democratic system:

Separation of Powers and Executive Control

Trump's encroachment upon the balance of powers has been significant. He has attempted to increase his own power at the expense of the other branches, shredding the very fabric of democracy.

Equality Before the Law

Revelations of racism and equal opportunity violations have tainted the administration. These actions have impacted agency policies, as well as education and culture on a broader scale.

Freedom of Speech and Free Press

The independence of the press is being tested as the government interferes in its affairs. Journalists find themselves under constant pressure, as political opponents facing punishment becomes an all-too-common occurrence.

Education and Research

Trump's pursuit of public school and university reforms has been met with controversy. Allegations of manipulation, exclusion, and propaganda abound, casting a dark shadow over the future of educational institutions.

For a more detailed examination of these areas, we delve deeper right here.

Somewhere Between Mexico and Hungary

Ranging from 0 for outright dictatorship to 100 for a flawless democracy, the United States has fallen significantly, from 67 to 49, as per regular surveys on the state of the political system under Trump's leadership. This marks the lowest score since the survey began in 2017.

The data collected by researchers is based on 30 indicators, such as whether the government infringes on press freedoms, penalizes political adversaries, or allows Congress and the judiciary to maintain sufficient checks on government power. The U.S. invariably emerges closer to a dictatorship than its neighbor, Mexico, but still primarily stands apart from Hungary.

The Shades of Autocracy: Competitive Authoritarianism

On the scale between a perfect democracy and a pure dictatorship, there are many intermediary shades. Many of these represent a form of competitive authoritarianism, in which elections take place and democratic institutions persist – but are co-opted to maintain power. Examples include the leaders of Hungary, Turkey, and Venezuela.

The United States seems to be drifting dangerously close to this category. "We have slid into a form of authoritarianism," declared political scientist Steven Levitsky, a co-originator of the term competitive authoritarianism over 20 years ago.

Recapitulating the Early Blows: A Clandestine Coup Attempt

It was only weeks into Trump's presidency that celebrated historian Timothy Snyder penned a piece asserting, "Of course it's a coup!" Snyder delved into the role that billionaire Elon Musk and his employees, operating under the cover of "Doge," played in accessing sensitive government databases and numerous federal agencies.

Musk and his followers had no democratic mandate, no authority, and no business meddling with the machinery of the U.S. government. Indeed, it was, as Snyder argued, a brazen coup. While some measures undertaken by the new administration have been stopped or restricted by the courts, the consequences of Musk's collaboration may persist throughout the duration of Trump's presidency.

Treading Water – The Struggle for Democracy Remains

Resistance, for the most part, comes from the judiciary. Trump's administration keeps the spotlight firmly on specific judges, putting immense pressure on them. However, not all decrees have been executed as planned, and many continue to be challenged in court.

The financial burden of legal defense is considerable in the U.S., and mere threats of lawsuits can often be enough to weaken the opposition's resolve. To date, Trump has relied largely on executive orders or ministerial decrees, leaving the scope for future reversals by any subsequent government that may ensure the necessary majorities.

Trump's actions have drawn harsh criticism from political analysts, with the editorial board of the New York Times describing his administration as "doing more damage to democracy than anything else since the fall of Reconstruction."

The License – A Keystone for Power Hunger

The critical question is not only whether the U.S. is slipping into authoritarianism but also for how long. The country's democratic system was far from perfect to begin with, largely due to voter suppression. The wide latitude for corporate and billionaire financing in elections, as well as the Supreme Court's rulings granting the president immunity, have facilitated Trump's unmatched power and corruption.

Flirting with the Worst-Case Scenario: The Weakening of Democracy in Focus

Undeniably, the bounds of democratic systems in the U.S. have shifted during Trump's tenure. This is evident in instances from the early days of his administration. For example, Trump almost escaped impeachment during his first term, with some members of his own party even lending him their support despite his questionable dealings with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, seeking campaign assistance in exchange for U.S. military aid.

The coming months and years may bear witness to Trump's administration becoming mired in political and legal quagmires, unable to move forward. However, future leaders could take a cue from his example, exercising power in a similar fashion or even augmenting it further. Whether the U.S. will remain in a state of perilous limbo or hurtle even deeper into authoritarianism remains to be seen.

A decisive factor will be the intentions of future presidential aspirants – those who aspire to respect the separation of powers, champion a free press, defend education and research, and ensure equal rights for all – or those who will challenge these very ideals.
