Sleaford Mods Launch Rallying Call with New Song "Megaton," Fundraising for War Child: "No War, No Death" Becomes Their Lyrics
Post-punk duo Sleaford Mods have released a new single, 'Megaton', to support War Child. The seven-inch edition of the single will be available on various colours of vinyl, including blue and red, from indie record shops and Rough Trade Records' web store.
The track, which tackles themes of social media-induced separatism, comes accompanied by a Nick Waplington-directed video, filmed at Speaker's Corner in London's Hyde Park. Speaker's Corner has housed speeches and discussions since the 1800s, making it an iconic location for the video.
Jason Williamson, frontman of Sleaford Mods, shared his thoughts on the collaboration with Waplington during an interview, stating, "Nick Waplington shares a connection with us through our shared history in Nottingham. His visual style and artistic perspective fit perfectly with ours to create something powerful and attention-grabbing."
The collaboration between Sleaford Mods and Waplington, however, did not originate from 'Megaton'. It is likely that their connection was formed through a previous collaboration for the music video to 'Mork N Mindy'. Waplington is a British photographer and artist, known for his work in street photography and documentation of music scenes. He has worked with various artists and is renowned for his artistic and photographic contributions to the music industry.
In addition to the seven-inch vinyl release, 'Megaton' is available for digital download and streaming. All profits from the single will be donated to support children affected by conflict.
During the same interview, Williamson also revealed that Sleaford Mods are "starting a new album". He shared that the band had had a few sessions for the new album and that things weren't so much shaping up yet.
Previously, Sleaford Mods teamed up with Hot Chip on 'Nom Nom Nom' and 'Cat Burglar', both of which were also in aid of War Child. The band's decision to offer five-pound gig tickets to fans on low incomes was also discussed in the interview.
'Megaton' is a powerful addition to Sleaford Mods' repertoire, further cementing their reputation for provocative and socially critical lyrics. The track, accompanied by Waplington's striking visuals, provides a thought-provoking commentary on modern society and the impact of social media.
