Russia Barred From 2026 Winter Olympics: FIL's Stance Reinforced

Slalom and Luge Competitions at the Olympics exempting Russian athletes

Tampere, Finland - The International Luge Federation (FIL) has reaffirmed its stance by barring Russian athletes from participating in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. This decision followed the FIL's 73rd congress held in Tampere, mirroring a shared responsibility to uphold fair and secure competition.

As FIL President Einars Fogelis put it, "Our congress has spoken. This outcome is a testament to our commitment to fostering a fair and secure competition environment." The ban extends to the qualification process, signaling a united front among international sports organizations in response to past events.

The debate centered around whether Russian athletes could participate as neutral athletes, under the guidelines set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, the FIL's decision firmly maintains the status quo, initiated on September 23, 2022.

Athletes' Opinions on the Ban

Leon Felderer, the chairman of the FIL Athletes' Commission, presented the findings of an anonymous survey conducted among luge and natural track athletes. The survey results revealed varying opinions, with concerns about safety, anti-doping measures, fairness, and equal opportunity in the Olympic qualification process. Felderer concluded, "The athletes' perspectives are diverse, with valid arguments from all sides."

The subsequent vote within the FIL resulted in a strong majority in favor of maintaining the current policy. 24 delegates voted to continue the ban, with 7 against and one invalid vote. In a second vote, the FIL executive was explicitly prohibited from developing a participation program for Russian athletes competing neutrally. Consequently, participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics remains impossible for Russian athletes.
