In November 2022, he shunned the foreign shores and returned to Ukraine, voluntarily joining the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Roman became a member of the 47th separate mechanized brigade "Magura" and was assigned as a squad commander. His younger brother, also a former soldier, joined him in the unit, sharing a common passion for football.
