Skyrocketing support for Germany's AfD in regional voting
Poll Shows Significant Drop in Support for CDU-SPD Coalition in Saxony-Anhalt
A new poll has revealed a significant drop in support for the current State government, a coalition of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.
According to the latest polling from early September 2025, conducted by Infratest dimap/MDR, MZ, and Volksstimme, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has gained 18 percentage points and currently leads with 39% of the vote in a survey for the State legislature elections in Saxony-Anhalt. The CDU, on the other hand, is polling at 27% (a decrease of 10 percentage points).
Sven Schulze, State economy minister and frontrunner for the CDU in next year's election, called the poll 'a snapshot.' However, he acknowledged that 'Nobody can be happy about these numbers' but noted that they have not even started their election campaign yet.
The SPD party is polling at 7% (a decrease of 2 percentage points), while Die Linke party is polling at 13% (an increase of 2 percentage points). The Linke party's rise in support is particularly noteworthy, as it could potentially make it into Saxony-Anhalt's parliament.
Another party expected to pass the 5-per-cent-hurdle to make it into the state parliament is the BSW, a Russia-friendly offshoot of Die Linke, which is polling at 6% in the survey.
If the poll results were to hold true in the elections, the CDU's only path to power would be a three-party coalition with the SPD and one of the two left-wing parties, Die Linke or BSW. However, Schulze stands by the CDU's line of excluding any coalition with the AfD.
Schulze did not comment on his party's preferences for coalition partners, but he did blame the dismal numbers for his party on a nationwide trend of dissatisfaction with politics. He expressed that the numbers are a result of 'a general discontent with the political establishment.'
The survey was conducted among about 1,200 respondents from August 28 to September 2 and commissioned by local newspaper Magdeburger Volksstimme. The poll indicates that other parties are polling at 5% (a decrease of 9 percentage points), while the Greens would fall below the 5% threshold at 3%.
The poll results suggest continued dismal support for the CDU party, and Schulze has a challenging year ahead as he prepares for the elections in 2026. The CDU will need to find a way to regain the support of voters and prevent a potential loss of power in Saxony-Anhalt.
