Skilled Trades Sector in Decline in North Rhine-Westphalia
The skilled trades sector in North Rhine-Westphalia has witnessed a notable decrease over the past decade. As of the end of 2022, there were just under 77,000 individuals in apprenticeships, representing a drop of 9.3% compared to 2013 as reported by IT.NRW in Düsseldorf.
Gender Disparities

The period from 2013 to 2022 has been marked by ups and downs, with a decline of 7,311 training contracts between 2013 and 2016, followed by a small increase of 2,682 and then another reduction since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
Top Training Occupations
Motor vehicle mechatronics technicians continue to hold the leading positions in the top 3 positions for popular apprenticeships, followed by electronics technicians and plant mechanics in sanitary, heating, and air conditioning technology. The hairdressing trade has seen the most significant decline (-43%), while plant mechanics (+24.1%) and electronics technicians (+28.5%) have experienced notable growth.
Vocational Education Vs. Higher Education
For many years, vocational companies have raised concerns about the increasing preference for higher education over vocational training among young people. Statistical data from North Rhine-Westphalia indicates that 27.3% of its residents between 25 and 64 have obtained advanced qualifications, including master craftsman, university of applied sciences, or university degrees. While the overall percentage is lower among women (27.3%) compared to men (32.0%), women aged 25-34 have surpassed men in this category.
Opportunities for Growth
Despite the decline in the skilled trades sector, particularly among women, there are still ample opportunities for individuals to pursue a craft career in North Rhine-Westphalia and contribute to the industry's growth.
Enrichment Data
The decline in the skilled trades sector can be attributed to several factors:
- Changing market demands in the automotive industry
- Structural changes within the industry, including plant closures
- Economic conditions, such as inflation and restrictive monetary policies
- Work-life balance and caregiving responsibilities, particularly for women
- Limited vocational training opportunities, especially for women
Potential solutions to reverse the decline include:
- Promoting vocational training
- Enhancing work-life balance
- Implementing industry-led initiatives, such as retraining programs and support for affected employees
- Public awareness and outreach campaigns
- Collaboration with educational institutions to develop inclusive and appealing vocational training programs
