Skiing champion admits regretfully: "Who will support me now?"
Fighting for a Comeback: Elisa Platino's Struggles in Winter Sports
Author: Sascha Mehr
Elisa Platino, the Italian ski sensation, is battling to revive her career following a dismal season. Burnout and financial struggles have been the bane of her existence.
Munich - After clinching a career-best 15th position in the World Cup during the 2023/24 season, promising signs suggested Elisa Platino was on the verge of breaking into the top ten. Fast forward to the present, and the 26-year-old finds herself in a drastically different landscape. Having ended the season without a single point, her dreams of representing Italy in the World Cup have been shattered, no thanks to a burnout.
A Season to Forget for Italian Ski Star
In a candid conversation with Sportnews.bz, Platino described the past season as a "plague season." Despite rigorous training, she struggled to maintain her usual performance level. "I had a burnout," she admitted. "My body and nervous system were utterly drained." This health and mental distress severely affected her performance on the slopes.
The next blow came in May 2025, when Platino learned via Facebook that she had been removed from the national team. "I was never contacted," she lamented about the communication concerning her exclusion. This revelation added not only emotional distress but also financial strain, leaving Platino to shoulder her training expenses, which can reach up to 50,000 euros for a single season.
A New Path to the World Cup
Without the support of the national team, Platino has to formulate her own training regimen, secure accommodations, and find sponsors. She has hired Patrick Renner, a private coach, to prepare for her return to the World Cup. "I'm pinning my hopes on his guidance and hoping for a positive outcome," she expressed to Sportnews.bz.
Refusing to wave the white flag, Platino continues to harbor ambitions of making it back to the Italian national team and, ultimately, participating in the Olympic Games. Challenged by an unconventional qualification process in Italy, where coaches decide who participates, she is hopeful for a fair opportunity. "I'm crossing my fingers for a fair shot," she said emphatically.
