Ski Mountaineers Perish in Avalanche at Rimpfischhorn
Two unnamed German adventurers were likely swept away by an avalanche while attempting to summit the 4,200-meter-high Rimpfischhorn in the Walliser Alps. Five individuals in total, aged between 34 and 38, met a tragic end in this chilling incident.
Among the victims were two individuals with German nationality, as confirmed by the Wallis police. The identities and residences of the other three Swiss victims have been established, though details remain undisclosed regarding their respective locations.
inexperienced climbers had initially spotted several abandoned skis near the summit, a common practice among climbers during final ascents. Initially, it was believed that the separate rope teams were traveling together, but the police later clarified that they were indeed separate groups.
Upon receiving the alarm, rescuers initially located three bodies approximately 500 meters below the skis. The other two were discovered at a separate location. Authorities presumed that all five were engulfed and carried away by the avalanche.
