Kickstarting Winter Fun at Fichtelberg - Snowy Delights Await with a Thaw on the Horizon
A festive, snow-filled adventure awaits ski enthusiasts at Fichtelberg, as the alpine season sprung to life a few days ahead of the 2nd Advent. Five out of six lifts have been humming since Wednesday, encouraging skiers to traverse around 10 kilometers of freshly groomed slopes. And, according to the Schwebebahn's head, René Lötzsch, the gleaming Himmelsleiter descent will be accessible by the weekend too.
Lötzsch shared his delight over the top-notch weather conditions, stating that the Fichtelberg is a winter wonderland like none other at this time of year. The mix of natural and artificial snow covers the slopes, reaching about 30 centimeters in height.
Despite last week's tranquility, ski lovers from various German communities flocked to the mountains to partake in the winter sports festivities, offering their praises for the park’s exceptional conditions. Even with limited visibility at the summit, the overall skiing experience was phenomenal. One enthused southern German skier went as far as likening it to a fairytale, while another tourist beamed about the idyllic charm of the area.
Cross-country skiing aficionados aren't forgetting about Oberwiesenthal either – their trails are prepared, groomed, and ready to welcome adventurers. And, as an added bonus, the winter hiking trails are open as well.
Though warmer weather is already melting the snow in lower Saxony regions, permafrost will persist in the mountains up till Friday, as per meteorologist Florian Engelmann of the German Weather Service. Engelmann foresaw a gloomy picture for winter sports after Friday, with warm air masses taking control and causing a thaw in the mountains up to 1,000 meters.
However, Lötzsch remains hopeful for Fichtelberg, believing they can handle a slight thaw without issue. Saxony's largest ski area boasts a host of new delights for skiers, including the installation of a 130-meter Wonder Carpet along the main slope and an extended lane connecting the summit to the main slope.
Additionally, Lötzsch is thrilled at the prospect of commencing construction on a modern chairlift for the Himmelsleiter, once funding is secured. The T-bar will be replaced with this upgrade, pending council approval.
Meanwhile, the lifts at the neighboring Keilberg in the Czech Republic plan to open on Friday as well.
