Here you can ski on the weekend - Ski resorts in Saxony and Thuringia defy snow shortages with artificial slopes

Ski resorts in Saxony and Thuringia are staying open this weekend despite patchy natural snow. Machine-made snow and freezing nights have kept the slopes in good shape. However, some areas face closures or require longer travel for visitors.

In Saxony, Eibenstock is preparing its trails daily with snow cannons. The nearby Fichtelberg resort has already opened its slopes, with multiple lifts running. Cold nights have helped maintain perfect piste conditions.

Thuringia is also ready for skiers, with Steinach offering ideal conditions for the weekend. But Oberhof will close on Friday and Saturday to host the Luge World Cup. No specific group has been named for producing artificial snow in the Thüringer Wald area.

Weather forecasts predict a dry, clear start to the weekend. Temperatures will range from -4°C to 0°C, with Thuringia seeing the mildest conditions. Meanwhile, Saxony-Anhalt’s ski slopes remain shut due to a lack of snow, forcing local skiers to travel further for downhill and cross-country options.

Resorts in Saxony and Thuringia are relying on artificial snow to stay open. Oberhof’s temporary closure will affect visitors, while Steinach and Fichtelberg welcome skiers with well-maintained pistes. Those in Saxony-Anhalt must look beyond their region for skiing this weekend.
