"Skating was not the only thing that brought romance into their lives."

Athletic victor Vladimir Osipov shares tale of initial world championship triumph in 1986, according to sports observations.

"Skating was not the only thing that brought romance into their lives."

In a tale that's almost too unbelievable to be true, the legendary figure skaters Sergei Grinkov and Ekaterina Gordeeva cut their teeth on the very same street, attended the same school, and were the furthest thing from each other's minds – both aspiring to conquer as top singles skaters. Unbeknownst to them, their coaches had written them off as untalented misfits. But fate had other plans, pairing them together out of pity for the time and resources already invested, and labeling them the "losing tandem."

Their improbable journey took a turn for the extraordinary when they astonished the world by winning their first World Championship in 1986, with Sergei at 19 and Katerina just 14 years of age. This remarkable victory heralded their dominance in figure skating, leading to a succession of three more World Championships in 1987, 1989, and 1990. Their routines were a perfect blend of artistic finesse and technical precision, setting the world aflame.

As if their skating charisma wasn't captivating enough, love soon entered the picture. The chemistry between the two was undeniable, aweing audiences around the globe. They skated to Mendelssohn's "Wedding March," and it seemed only fitting that this beautiful music would play during their wedding as well. Together, they welcomed a daughter, Dasha, and the duo aimed for yet another Olympic medal.

Their rivals seemed to underestimate the dynamic pair, but in 1994, Gordeeva and Grinkov once again dazzled the world, clinching the gold in Lillehammer Olympics. After their second Olympic victory, the "most beautiful pair in figure skating history" moved to the US and appeared in ice shows, pursuing new dreams. However, tragedy struck during a training session when Sergei collapsed on the ice, leaving the world of figure skating mourning the sudden loss of this extraordinary athlete – he had passed away from a heart attack, just 28 years old.

Ekaterina continues to live in Canada, having been married twice. Today, she is happily married to Canadian figure skater David Pelletier, whose skating partnership with Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze made headlines in 2002. Little did anyone know, this unexpected romantic turn of events would unfold before their eyes.
