Six individuals in Poland accused of engaging in acts of sabotage
The Polish prosecutor's office has charged six individuals - three Polish nationals and three from Belarus - with crimes including sabotage, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking. The suspects are accused of involvement in several arson attacks and other acts of sabotage, which were allegedly carried out on behalf of foreign intelligence agencies.
The specific countries involved in the allegations were not revealed, but the context suggests they could be Russia and Belarus. These accusations come in the wake of increased investigations into foreign agents, which have seen a significant surge since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The group is accused of carrying out arson attacks on warehouses in Gdańsk and the Warsaw suburb of Marki. Additionally, a Belarusian citizen was charged with planning to sabotage a warehouse in eastern Poland, also allegedly on behalf of foreign intelligence.
A spokesperson for the agency told AFP that one defendant had previously been accused of carrying out sabotage acts on behalf of the Russian intelligence service. The goal of these foreign agents, as mentioned earlier, was to cause social unrest and create a sense of helplessness among state authorities.
The charges against the individuals include organizing and carrying out sabotage acts, weapons trafficking, and drug trafficking. Both Russia and Belarus have denied these allegations.
A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office mentioned the increase in cases in connection with investigations into foreign agents. The arson attacks and trafficking activities are alleged to have been part of a larger strategy to undermine the authority of state institutions, creating public unrest.
As of last month, Poland's prime minister, Donald Tusk, stated that 32 people had been arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Russian intelligence services. The prosecutor's office in Poland continues to investigate these matters, working to uncover the full extent of these alleged activities.
