Cheers to Franz Semper's Return to the National Team!
Leipzig's Franz Semper (26) is back in the national team fold after a rough patch with injuries in Flensburg. Initially, he was included in the provisional squad for the European Championship by national coach Alfred Gislason. This selection is a marked turnaround for Semper, who sought to restart his career following his move back to Leipzig.
"Being in the big squad is definitely a wonderful feeling," says Semper, but he stresses that nothing has changed yet. He emphasizes that, aside from informing the Nada (National Anti-Corruption Agency) about his whereabouts daily, his everyday life remains the same.
Advancing to the final European Championship squad is certainly within Semper's reach, with six more games in December, including five Bundesliga matches and a cup game. Semper smiles, "It's a good thing to check the national team's schedule and plan your vacation accordingly to avoid any unnecessary rescheduling." He, however, avoids putting too much pressure on himself: "I try not to focus on the national team during club games. I concentrate on my club and our objectives to win games and achieve success. If that goes well, the other things will fall into place naturally."
Semper's return to form is good news for Leipzig's Handball team, as they prepare for their upcoming game against Erlangen on Sunday (4.30 p.m.).
Besides Semper, two other Leipzig players, Luca Witzke and Simon Ernst, also feature in the provisional squad. Semper jokes, "It could be nice if we could carpool at the end."
