Yakutia Faces Ongoing Emergency Due to Forest Fires and Flooding

The forest fire situation in Yakutia, Russia's largest region, remains critical, despite a less severe overall scale compared to the same period in 2024. As of July 27, 2025, there are 28 forest fires and 3 landscape fires covering over 28,000 hectares in the region.

The Verkhoyansky and Tomponsky districts have been placed under emergency due to the fires, with more than 300 people fighting to contain the blazes. In comparison, by the same date in 2024, there were 115 forest fires covering over 916,000 hectares in Yakutia.

The Kobyaysky district has seen 10 new forest fires covering 104.4 hectares, while the Tomponsky district has reported 9 new fires. These recent discoveries have contributed to the current fires being larger than they were at the same point in 2024.

The situation in Yakutia has been compounded by recent heavy rains that caused floods and evacuations in Oymyakon, Momsky, and Tomponsky districts. These floods have added to the emergency conditions in the region.

A special fire prevention regime has been in effect in Yakutia since June 5, 2025. The emergency regime in the Verkhoyansky district was recently introduced. The fires are being reported on various platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, VK, OK, and Twitter.

Despite the ongoing efforts, no new information was provided about the total number of people involved in the firefighting efforts or the current status of the fires outside of the Kobyaysky and Tomponsky districts.

The seriousness of the situation in Yakutia underscores the need for continued vigilance and support in the fight against forest fires. As the region faces both the risk of fires and recent flooding, the emergency conditions are likely to persist in the coming weeks.
