Game of Thrones' Fabled Dark Hedges Trees Undergo Changes

The mesmerizing Dark Hedges avenue, a well-known tourist spot in Northern Ireland, is undergoing alterations due to old age and storm damage. According to reports by Belfast Telegraph, six trees along this historic lane are being felled, with further branch trimmings on various trees.

The renowned location, often depicted as 'King's Road' in HBO's renowned series, Game of Thrones, has been a site of curiosity for visitors, causing disruptions on the Bregagh Road and ironically, falling in love with its charm. The road has been closed for car traffic for years due to such inconveniences, and now, even pedestrians are temporarily restricted from passing along the avenue.

Mervyn Storey from the Dark Hedges Preservation Trust acknowledged the necessity of tree removal for safety reasons: "Even though we wish these trees to stand the test of time, they are 300-year-old relics, and somewhat delicate now. This is a process that needs to happen."

Two separate surveys suggested the immediate need for the affected trees' removal. A long-term preservation and replanting plan are vital to the avenue's continuation, as Storey emphasized. "An eight-second stint on Game of Thrones forever altered Bregagh Road and the Dark Hedges. Our beloved landmark continues to be a magnet for curious visitors, leaving a trail of wear and tear in its wake."

The avenue itself dates back to the 18th century, when the Stuart family planted the beech trees along the Bregagh Road. Its fame reached global acclaim following its appearance on Game of Thrones, with the series' four seasons attracting millions of viewers worldwide.
