Situation at Pokrovsk reported as stabilised, according to the Ukrainian General Staff
In the eastern part of Ukraine, the cities of Pokrovsk and Dobropillia have been the recent focus of a volatile conflict. Russian forces have reportedly made a breakthrough in these cities, a development that has prompted stabilization efforts from the Ukrainian government.
The situation in Pokrovsk remains tense, with ongoing heavy fighting and a partially encircled status as of mid to late August 2025. Ukrainian forces have made some localized advances west and southwest of Pokrovsk, notably near Udachne, despite persistent Russian attacks and infiltration attempts around and inside the city. Russian forces have been executing a slow but steady offensive push to encircle Pokrovsk from multiple directions, aiming to cut key supply routes and isolate the city along with adjacent Myrnohrad.
Russian tactics have involved small groups of infantry infiltrating Ukrainian lines, establishing footholds in surrounding villages, and advancing despite high casualties. The advances have penetrated up to 15 kilometers near Dobropillia, threatening road connections between Dobropillia, Pokrovsk, and Kramatorsk, a critical logistics hub in Donetsk Oblast.
The intense fighting in Pokrovsk has caused significant Ukrainian casualties. Ukrainian commanders have warned that the loss of Pokrovsk would critically disrupt logistics for this region’s Ukrainian-controlled cities. The fighting has been concentrated on multiple fronts northeast, east, south, and southwest of Pokrovsk, with both sides attempting to capture or retake small settlements.
In response to the reported Russian breakthrough, Kyiv has reportedly deployed reserves to stabilize the situation in the eastern Ukrainian cities. The cities of Pokrovsk and Dobropillia are strategically important for controlling access deeper into Ukraine, and the ongoing conflict reflects this significance.
