Sisterly influence looming over, attributed to Miss Austen.
In the world of literature and drama, a new miniseries is set to captivate audiences, delving into the life of Cassandra Austen, sister of the renowned writer Jane Austen. Entitled 'Miss Austen', this four-part drama will air on Arte on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 8:15 PM.
The miniseries, based on a bestseller by Gill Hornby, follows Cassandra Austen's journey as she travels to Kintbury to support Isabella Fowle, an acquaintance, whose father, a highly respected pastor, is on his deathbed. It is during this visit that Cassandra meets her sister-in-law Mary Austen and discovers a trove of letters written by Jane to Eliza Fowle.
Initially, Cassandra intends to destroy these letters, but as she delves into them, she uncovers forgotten experiences and hidden truths about love, loss, and life in the shadow of a great sister. The letters reveal a more intimate side of Jane's life, offering a fresh perspective beyond the literary myth.
Keeley Hawes portrays Cassandra Austen in the miniseries, with Rose Leslie and Patsy Ferran as part of the ensemble cast. 'Miss Austen' is directed by Aisling Walsh, promising a compelling narrative that will resonate with viewers.
The letters Cassandra finds also bring forth flashbacks of her youth and her engagement to Tom Fowle, a man who departs on a dangerous expedition. Jane Austen expresses her doubts about Cassandra's decision to marry Tom Fowle in moving words, adding a poignant layer to the story.
Pastor Fowle, before his demise, asks Cassandra to find a new home for his daughter Isabella. In her quest to fulfil this request, Cassandra discovers more about her own life and the life of her sister, Jane.
'Miss Austen' promises to offer a unique and intimate look at the lives of the Austen sisters, going beyond the literary myth that has been established. Tune in to Arte on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 8:15 PM to witness this intriguing narrative unfold.
