Sisi, President of Egypt, appeals to Trump for an end to the conflict in Gaza

In a passionate plea, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump on July 28, 2025, urging him to use his influence to end Israel's ongoing war in Gaza and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian enclave. The situation in Gaza, which has been embroiled in conflict for over 21 months, has become "tragic and unbearable," Sisi stated, with a severe humanitarian crisis looming over its population of over two million people.

The Egyptian leader called on Trump to "make every effort to stop the war and bring in aid," emphasizing that Trump's unique position could potentially achieve a ceasefire and facilitate aid delivery. The conflict has left Gaza's infrastructure in ruins and led to widespread starvation, malnutrition, and a critical lack of supplies, as highlighted by UN agencies and aid groups.

In an attempt to alleviate the crisis, Egypt has been actively involved in mediation efforts aimed at securing an elusive truce, as well as in sending aid into Gaza. However, coordination with Israel remains a significant challenge. The Rafah crossing, which has been a vital conduit for life-saving aid in the past, has been effectively closed since Israeli forces seized its Palestinian side more than a year ago.

The Israeli military is responsible for inspecting Gaza-bound aid deliveries at an Israeli crossing to the east. As a result, aid from Egypt must be rerouted through this crossing for Israel's inspection before entering Gaza. Sisi stressed the need for a sustained flow of aid, noting that 600 to 700 trucks of humanitarian supplies are required daily to adequately address the crisis.

Alongside stopping the war and delivering aid, Egypt and other mediators are also focused on the issue of releasing hostages taken during the conflict. Protests have erupted outside Egyptian embassies in Lebanon and Libya, demanding an immediate end to Egypt's complicity in blockading Gaza.

In response to mounting international pressure, Israel has recently eased some restrictions, allowing limited aid convoys, humanitarian pauses, and safe corridors into Gaza. The UAE has launched a large-scale medical and humanitarian aid campaign for Gaza, and Israel has said it would allow more aid into the devastated territory, which was under a complete blockade for two months ending in late May.

Trump, in a statement, acknowledged the potential for a ceasefire between America's close ally Israel and Hamas, stating that it was still "possible". Sisi's impassioned call underlines a critical moment where renewed diplomatic efforts, spearheaded by the U.S., are sought to end hostilities in Gaza and urgently address the humanitarian catastrophe there. No breakthrough was reported in recent talks in Doha between U.S., Qatari, and Egyptian mediation regarding a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Despite the challenges, Sisi maintained that Egypt's ethics, values, and national responsibility would not allow it to obstruct the delivery of aid to Palestinians across the border. The Egyptian President's call for intervention serves as a reminder of the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict in Gaza and the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to its suffering population.

  1. With the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, genuine effort is required from international leaders to stop the ongoing war, deliver humanitarian aid, and secure the immediate release of hostages, as these issues are now an essential part of the general news agenda.
  2. The conflict in Gaza has not only led to war and conflicts that demand attention in war-and-conflicts news but also created a severe food shortage among its population, which calls for immediate action from political leaders, highlighted by recent food news.
