Sir John Eliot Gardiner Embarks on Historic Bach Cantata Pilgrimage

Sir John Eliot Gardiner, a celebrated English conductor, recently embarked on the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage, a monumental project to perform all of Bach's cantatas across Europe. Known for his interpretations of Baroque music, Gardiner is a respected figure in the classical music world.

Gardiner's journey began in his hometown of Fontmell Magna, Dorset, where he was born on 20 April 1943. At the age of 15, he started his conducting career, marking the beginning of a remarkable musical journey.

In 1964, Gardiner founded the Monteverdi Choir, followed by the English Baroque Soloists, both renowned for their interpretations of Baroque music on period instruments. His passion for Bach's music led him to undertake the ambitious Bach Cantata Pilgrimage, a significant project to perform all of Bach's cantatas on the Sundays and major feast days of the church year. Gardiner's commitment to Bach's music is evident in his extensive discography, comprising over 250 albums.

Gardiner's dedication to historical performance practices is also reflected in his period orchestra, Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, which specializes in late-classical and early Romantic repertoire. His unique interpretations have earned him a reputation as one of the leading conductors of his generation.

In May 2023, Gardiner led the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists in a selection of choral music at Westminster Abbey for the coronation of His Majesty the King, a testament to his enduring influence in the classical music world.
